Republic of Ireland Under 19 1 Chile 2 Arce (o.g.) 60 Barrientos 66, 79 A very good crowd turn up to watch Ireland under 19 team play Chile in Athlone on Tuesday night. It was great to see so many families at a game – it was like the good old days when all the family went to games. With only five minutes on the clock Ireland forced a corner and James Berrett of Huddersfield Town forced a save out of the Chilean ‘keeper Gregory Saavedra. In the early stages the Ireland midfield were well on top with West Ham’s Lorcan Fitzgerald running the show. The first yellow card of the game came on 19 minutes with Chile’s Cristian Ararca fouled the Ireland captain Michael Spillane and from the free-kick James Berrett forced a good save from the Chilean keeper Saavedra. Late in the first half Chile stated to show good build-up play in front of the Irish goal. Half-time score was Rep. of Ireland 0 Chile 0. A spell of concerted pressure in the opening stage of the second half paid off when Ireland took the lead after 60 minutes but Sebastian Barrientos showed a clean pair of heels to twice beat the Irish rearguard and stick away two goals. Final score: Rep. of Ireland 1 Chile 2. Man of the Match was West Ham United’s Lorcan Fitzgerald. Lorcan said after the game: ‘It was two silly mistakes at the back that cost us the game’.
