Athleague on course for back-to-back titles

Roscommon Senior Camogie Championship Final: Athleague v Four Roads in Rockfield on Saturday at 4 pm

Athleague will try to win back-to-back senior camogie titles on Saturday when they face Four Roads in what should be an exciting final at Oran.

In 2015, Athleague stopped Four Roads’ winning run after they had clocked up seven senior titles in a row with a memorable win, and they will be hoping to hold on to the trophy again this year.

Joe Mannion is back in charge of Four Roads this year and he will be anxious to get his side back on the title-winning trail. Meanwhile, Athleague joint team managers Ciara Moran and Liam Gordon will be determined to make a statement and make Athleague the undisputed top camogie club in the county.

There are plenty of excellent players on both sides, For Athleague there is an ideal blend of younger and more experienced players like Elaine Daly, Kelley Hopkins, Annette McGeeney, Rachel Fitzmaurice, Nora Brennan, Niamh Farrell and Laura Fleming to name just a few.

Four Roads are not short on quality either, with Marie Glennon, Donna Kelly, Patricia Lennon, Aisling Fallon, Lizzie Glennon, Niamh Coyle, and Sarah Kelly to call on and there is always a huge hunger in Four Roads to win titles and they will want the title back from Athleague for certain.

Athleague will want to prove that last year’s victory was not a flash in the pan and they are justifiably slight favourites to take the title. Don’t rule out a draw, but I give a hesitant vote to Athleague to win it narrowly. Prediction: Athleague
