The Design Team has been appointed for the €7.85m Medical Rehabilitation Unit at Roscommon Hospital.
Funding approval of more than €560,000 has been allocated to move to the design phase of this project. This marks a major milestone for this €7.85m capital development.
The new facility will be a satellite centre of the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire and will provide intensive interdisciplinary rehabilitation to patients based in the West of Ireland.
Minister Denis Naughten said that the hospital has received funding approval of over €560,000 to move to the design phase.
He said: “This development will provide a much needed specialist rehabilitation beds to patients throughout the West of Ireland and the Midlands who currently cannot access this vital service”.
Senator Frank Feighan said that the new 20-bed unit will be of huge benefit to patients in this region. It will enable treatment of patients from the West of Ireland in Roscommon University Hospital who would have previously been treated in the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) in Dublin, and will also assist in reducing waiting times for patients who require access to the NRH.
Senator Maura Hopkins also welcomed the news. “I receive calls on a weekly basis from family members of individuals who, following serious trauma, are waiting to get into the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire.
“As an Occupational Therapist and having worked in rehabilitation, I am acutely aware of the positive impact that early access intervention can have for those in need of rehabilitation. I have raised this matter with Minister Simon Harris on several occasions and will continue to work hard to ensure that this project can progress to planning in a timely manner.”
Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy welcomed the news. “It is great news to see further developments taking place at Roscommon University Hospital and I would like to see this project progress as quickly as possible” he said.
