Angus championships top the bill in the cattle section

Highlights of the cattle section at this year’s Roscommon Agricultural Show include the All Ireland Angus Junior Bull and Heifer Championship and the qualifiers for the all Ireland beef heifer and beef bullock championships. Details of this year’s cattle section at Roscommon Agricultural Show were outlined by James Gleeson, head of the cattle section, at the recent show launch in Hannon’s Hotel. This year’s section includes pedigree classes for Hereford, Charolais, Limousin, Angus, Simmental and Shorthorn breeds. There are also non-pedigree classes for all breeds, as well as qualifiers for the All Ireland Beef Heifer and Beef Bullock championships. The top competition in the cattle section at this year’s Roscommon Show is the All Ireland Angus Junior Bull and Heifer Championships, while interest is also expected to be high in the qualifier for the Connacht non-pedigree commercial continental calf competition. The prize for the best butchers’ heifer is sponsored by Hynes Butchers, and All Creatures Veterinary Clinic is the sponsor of the classes for the best weanling male and female calves. The All Ireland Angus (non-pedigree) heifer class is sponsored by Doran Bros and there is direct entry. The Roscommon Show Champion breeding heifer is open to all breeds of non-pedigree cattle and the winner receives the John O’Beirne Perpetual Cup, while the Overall Champion receives the Seamus Duignan Memorial Cup in recognition of the outstanding contribution of the late Seamus Duignan to Roscommon Show over the course of many years.
