Anger as FBD to leave Ballaghaderreen

FBD Insurance will close its office in Ballaghaderreen on Friday, the 21st December next. The six staff working there will all be transferred to the Roscommon town office or to a new FBD office which is to open in Athlone in January.   A spokesperson for the company confirmed to The Roscommon People that from Monday the 31st of December most of the Ballaghaderreen staff will be re-deployed to Roscommon town.    The company say that their service in County  Roscommon will be enhanced with the expansion of the Roscommon town office and the opening of a new Athlone branch. FBD Insurance have had a Ballaghaderreen base for the past six years.   Mayor of Roscommon and local Cllr. John Kelly says that he is very disappointed at the news of the departure of FBD from Ballaghaderreen.    ‘I’m disappointed, and I know that the farmers and local people in this area will be very disappointed. FBD set up here six years ago and they did a great business since. I am a customer myself but it seems to me that the minute they attracted a lot of business they  decided to pull out of the town, which is cynical’ he said.    ‘I hope that another major insurance company will come in to replace FBD and I can assure them that I will be supporting a company who offers employment locally and do not pull out whenever they feel like it. It’s also unfair on the staff there who will have more travelling to do to get to work.’    Mr. Declan O’Callaghan, chairperson of Ballaghaderreen & District Development Ltd., said that news of the FBD closure was ‘unfortunate’ and ‘a setback’ for the town.
