Plans for a brand new road to replace the existing N5 National Primary Route between Scramogue Cross and Ballaghaderreen have been drawn up by the NRA planning office and a specific route has been agreed, The Roscommon People has learned. The new route is planned to extend from the proposed Ballaghaderreen by-pass travelling south of Frenchpark, north of Balinagare and travelling eastwards to cross the N61 close to Shankill Cross. The new road would then extend to Lugboy near Elphin whereupon it would head due south and join the existing road at Scramogue Cross. The plans have only just been drawn up and several more years of consultation and planning will have to be undertaken before the project would be at the stage where it might be funded. However it is known that a few different routes were considered by the NRA in the past few years and the one they have chosen is the one that will go to the next planning stage. It is thought that if the road were to become a reality it would be at least 2012 before any work would be considered, given all the stages that it must pass in the meantime. However the new road would be an interesting proposal and it would cause plenty of talking points in the mid and west Roscommon area in the next few years if it were to go ahead. The People attempted to contact a spokeperson for the NRA on Wednesday but there was no-one in a position to comment on the matter.
