ALONE supported almost 500 older people in Roscommon this year

ALONE has supported 498 older people across County Roscommon so far this year, with the assistance of 142 volunteers, according to figures released by the organisation.

The charity, which supports older people to remain living independently at home, is now appealing for additional volunteers in the county as demand for its services continues to grow.

ALONE said loneliness remains the single biggest issue driving older people in the county to seek its support.

Its volunteers provide services including regular visits and phone calls, companionship and practical assistance, while helping older people connect with other services where required.

Nationally, ALONE says it supported more than 46,800 older people during 2025, with volunteers providing more than 270,000 hours of support.

The organisation said a recent survey found 84% of older people using its Support and Befriending Service reported decreased loneliness and increased happiness.

ALONE CEO Seán Moynihan said volunteers could make a significant difference to an older person’s quality of life and ability to continue living independently.
