All-Ireland win for Leona and Hilary

The local handball fraternity is celebrating another title for Leona Doolin  after she won the All Ireland Colleges (2nd Level) Senior doubles 60 X 30 title at Tuamgraney with Hilary Rushe. In a short space of time she has won the All Ireland Minor doubles 60 X 30 title with Marianna Rushe, two trips on the Irish team to the Basque Country and the USHA Nationals in Tucson, Arizona and the All Ireland Colleges Senior doubles title for Convent of Mercy, Roscommon. Girls Colleges (2nd Level) 60 X 30 semis and finals at Tuamgraney:  Junior Singles: Amy Corrigan (St Nathys) beat Aine Casey (Tralee) in the semi-final and Mary Phelan (Castlecomer CS) beat Clodagh Donaghy (Tyrone) in the semi and in the final the on-form Amy Corrigan had little difficulty beating the strong Kilkenny girl. A good year for the Ballaghaderreen girl with the U-14 singles, the Golden Gloves and now the colleges title to her credit.  Junior doubles: Stephanie Coleman and Pamala Conroy (St. Nathys) won the doubles in style with a particularly good display by Stephanie Coleman. In the semi they beat Lisa and Paula Loughnane (Rice College, Ennis) in the tie breaker and in the final they defeated Sandra Kelly and Roseanna Boland of St. Mary’s, New Ross. Senior Singles: Linda Connolly (Convent of Mercy, Roscommon) beat Sarah Cunningham of Tralee 21-8, 21-14, she played well against the hard hitting Kerry girl. However, in the final Linda didn’t have the experience of Shauna Hilley of Carnew, Wicklow, who went on to win the final 21-6, 21-6. Senior doubles: Convent of Mercy, Roscommon had in Leona  Doolin and Hilary Rushe, two very experienced players and they had no difficulty in beating the St. Joseph’s, Tulla, Clare team of Kate Lynch and Ashling Hannon 21-4, 21-6. This is the Convent’s third senior doubles title in a row. Top marks to the Tuamgraney Club and Clooney’s Tom Loughnane for their hospitality during a long day of competition. Thanks too, to Pat Connolly for transport. In the boys Intermediate singles another success for St. Nathys with Stephen Cooney beating Ger McGrath of Ballyhale, Limerick in the final. In the doubles Paul Keegan and Grant Deeney of Nathys beat Josephs of Tulla but lost in the final to Castlecomer Community College. Connact 60 X 30 ‘B’ U-12 doubles final at Comans: At Comans Clodagh McKeon and Ciara Flynn of Sligo defeated Tanya Ferguson and Sara Keenan of St. Comans 10-15, 15-9, 15-7 in the Connacht U-12 final. Boys Team Events All ireland Finals (60 X 30): U-12/13 Carlow beat Cork 74-54; U-14/15 Waterford defeated Kilkenny 79-44, U-16/17 Wexford defeated Cork 56-42. Jan. 26-27th Irish National Qualifiers Feb. 1 – 3rd Third Level Colleges singles Championships. 40 X 20 Senior Singles and doubles Preliminery rounds. Feb. 9 – 10th Kingscourt International Open Tournament. Feb. 15 – 17th 40 X 20 Senior Singles Round of 16. Feb. 16th Gael Linn Mixed doubles (U-13 years). Feb. 23rd Boys and Girls Colleges 40 X 20 semis and finals. Feb. 20 – 24th 40 X 20 Senior doubles round of 16. USHA Collegiates in Missouri. Feb. 28th – March 1st USHA Tournament. March 1st Girls Inter Pro 40 X 20 team of ten.  All players should note these events, dates etc and the Conty Board should note that the 40 X 20 championship commences 19th/20th January and all players taking part must be members of their respective clubs and registered before they can take part in championship or competitions. Girls team of ten 60 X 30 Interprovincial: This competition was scheduled for next Saturday 17th November but Munster and Leinster may be seeking a postponement to the following weekend. At the time of going to Press there is uncertainty about the date.
