Luke McCabe, Derryhippo, Creggs won a prestigious All-Ireland silver medal in Senior Men’s Judo, quite an achievement at 16! The original venue and date were changed due to adverse weather conditions at the time. It took place at Ashbourne, County Meath with a very high entry from north and south of the border on Sunday 24 th February. Luke astounded us with a combination of speed, fitness and style rarely seen in a lad his age. He is better than he has ever been. Whilst a veteran at junior level, this was his first men’s tournament and the most important. Luke is a pupil at St. Mary’s College, Ballygar. The result is even more amazing by the fact that Luke has ‘self trained’ for the last eight months, as his club (Roscommon and Ballygar) is temporarily closed until the summer. He has exercised great self-discipline and motivation, kept up his skill and achieved a higher fitness level on his own initiative. We are all very proud of him. His next tournament is the ‘Galway Open’ on 8 th March.
