6th annual Keenan Banjo Festival in Longford

The 6th annual Johnny Keenan Banjo Festival will be held in Longford town from Thursday 13th September to Sunday 16th September next. The festival is one of the biggest music festivals in the country and it is expected that it will bring over 2,000 visitors in to the town over the four days. In all, over 20,000 people are expected to attend all the different musical events in the area.   The line-up this year is the most impressive yet and it will include The Nasville Bluegrass Band who have won two Grammy awards, legendary US hitmaker Guy Clark and multi-award winning US singer-songwriter Tim O’Brien. Four Men and a Dog return to the festival this years as do top Irish band Dervish.   In addition to the several organised events and concerts there will be sessions and performances in the many public houses and music venues throughout the town over the four days of the festival.   The highlights are – Thursday 13th September: Concert in Longford Arms Hotel featuring an international selection of bluegrass music at 8 pm. On Friday night also at the Longford Arms (at 8 pm) there is another gala concert, featuring Four Men and a Dog, Tim O’Brien and Artie McGlynn, Enda Scahill and Paul Brock and the Carter Brothers band.   On Saturday 15th September there will be free live concerts on the Market Square, workshops at St. Michaels School and in The Longford Arms the concert at 7.30 pm will feature the Nashville Bluegrass Band, Dervish, Carter Brothers and Niamh Parsons.   On Sunday there will be more live concerts on the Market Square and the final gala concert in The Longford Arms at 7.30 pm will feature Gerry O’Connor Trio, Guy Clark, Unwanted and The Niall Toner Band.   The Johnny Keenan Banjo Festival was launched for the first time in 2002 in tribute to multi-instrumentalist Johnny Keenan who died in the year 2000. The festival has grown into one of the biggest music festivals in the country and is now four days full of indoor and outdoor concerts, street and pub sessions and masterclass workshops.
