€5.5 million Endoscopy Unit officially opened

Minister for Health Simon Harris officially opened the new €5.5 million Endoscopy Unit at Roscommon University Hospital yesterday afternoon (Wednesday).

The unit, which has been open to patients since June, will be able to carry out up to 30 endoscopies a day once full capacity is reached.

Minister Harris said: “It’s a great honour to be here with all of you today and with all the staff and management here at Roscommon University Hospital to officially open this new endoscopy unit.

“Since becoming Minister for Health, I’ve taken time over the last few months to travel to as many of our hospitals as I can. I think I’ve been to around twenty so far and to have an opportunity to meet with frontline staff, to see the work that’s being done on the ground – that’s what makes me very proud and honoured to hold this position.

“I’m so pleased that finally we’re getting a little bit of recognition for the work of our great frontline staff in the media with the RTE programme, ‘Keeping Ireland Alive’ that’s rightfully acknowledging the challenges that our health service faces and also the absolutely incredible work done by our staff on a daily basis and I look forward to Roscommon University Hospital featuring there and the staff in this hospital rightfully being acknowledged for their incredible work as well.”

The Minister then went on to highlight the significance of the opening to Roscommon University Hospital.

“This is a great day for Roscommon University Hospital. As many of you know who have been working on this for many years. This endoscopy unit cost €5.5 million and it opened on a daily basis in June of this year and the next plan is to bring it to full capacity and get it up to the five days per week service. We are actively recruiting staff to get to that point and we will get there by 2017.”

The new unit, which Minister Harris described as “state-of-the-art”, features two endoscopy rooms and associated decontamination and support facilities.

Minister Harris concluded by stating the importance of Roscommon University Hospital to the region.

“Roscommon University Hospital has demonstrated it is a hospital that has an essential role to play in the Saolta Hospital Group. Roscommon is already providing much needed capacity in terms of chronic disease management, day surgery, diagnostics and rehabilitation both to the immediate local area but also to that wider Saolta group.”
