News of the latest major jobs announcement for Athlone town has been hailed as a significant boost for Mid and South Roscommon this week. Kinetic Concepts, Inc. of the US, a global medical technology company, plans to establish a Global Manufacturing Operation at the IDA Business & Technology Park in Garrycastle – with 250 jobs resulting over the next five years. About one-fifth of the jobs will be for third-level graduates. Minister Micheal Martin made the announcement on Wednesday. Local TDs Michael Finneran and Denis Naughten welcomed the news. Deputy Finneran said the jobs will benefit people living in mid and south Roscommon. ‘This company is a leader in its field. Its establishment in Athlone will not only see direct job creation but will also benefit different suppliers and business people in the entire Midlands region. ‘The people of mid and south Roscommon have a natural affinity with the town of Athlone and many young Roscommon people have lived there at some point to attend the Institute of Technology’. Deputy Denis Naughten has also welcomed the news. ‘This announcement is a major step forward in promoting the Midlands as a hub for the medical device and pharmaceutical industry as well at the positive economic impact that it will have on the Athlone area,’ he said. ‘I also understand that former employees of Conor Medsystems, which closed earlier this year, will be recruited for this operation, which is also a welcome development’.
