The theme of this year’s rally will be Think Road Safety and the Midland Motor Club will be putting up posters and banners to that effect along the stage routes to remind people about road safety. Speaking at this weeks launch Clerk of the Course Eoin Longworth said that the Midland Motor Club were delighted to be back in the Roscommon Town area with their annual rally again. ‘This is a huge event and a lot of planning goes into it. The B&Bs and hotels in the area are already booked out that weekend and we are looking forward to a great weekend of sport. We thank all our sponsors for their great help. We could not have a rally without them. We will be stressing the whole area of road safety this year and we will be asking the public for their co-operation with our stewards.’ One of the main sponsors Jim Casey congratulated the Midland Motor Club on their initiative. ‘They deserve our praise for their hard work and I hope the rally will be a great success. I know that it will be’ he said. The other main sponsor Adrian Grealy on behalf of the Abbey Hotel said that the rally was a great boost to Roscommon Town. ‘We are delighted to be associated with this prestigious event and we are looking forward to hosting the Midland Motor Club over that weekend. I hope the people come out and support the rally as it is a great spectacle’ he said. Supt. of Roscommon Gardai Willie Gallagher congratulated the Midland Motor Club on their work and their Road Safety Campaign in particular. ‘We find them a great group to work with and we have had no problems with them at all. I am glad that they are taking the notion of road safety seriously and maybe the young people might listen to the Rally fraternity on the issue of road safety because the message does not seem to be getting through to some people’ he said. ‘There are still far too many people losing their lives on our roads and if the intiative of the Midland Motor Club saves even one person from being hurt or killed on our roads the it will have been very worthwhile’ he said. ‘Rally drivers are probably the safest drivers on the road but it is many of the people who attend these rallies that have nothing to do with the Midland Motor Club that are at risk and we appeal to them to exercise caution on the roads every weekend. I wish the rally the best of luck and I hope it is a great success’ he concluded. More details of the route sponsors and awards in the coming week.
