1943 All-Ireland medal m to be auctioned An All-Ireland senior football championship winner’s medal from 1943 (won by Roscommon) will come up for auction next Tuesday in Dublin. The medal is part of a huge collection of GAA and other memorabilia which will be auctioned off in the sale. A spokesperson for the auctioneers — Mealys Ltd. of Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny – told the People that the medal is part of a huge collection of items being sold by the families of two collectors who have passed away. The auctioneers say that the medal will be sold as one lot and according to Mealys there has been ‘huge interest in this medal given that it was Roscommon’s first win and that the county have not won the All-Ireland since 1943/44’. The guide price is €2,500 to €3,500 but given the interest shown in the medal so far the price could be far in excess of that figure. The auction of 1100 lots of collectable items will take place at the Tara Towers Hotel in Dublin on Tuesday, March 20th starting at 10am and viewing will take place on Sunday and Monday next. Tony Conboy, who wrote The History of Roscommon GAA some years ago says that it would be appropriate if this medal could come back to Roscommon or that a Roscommon person might aquire it given its historical value to the county.
