1500 local students take part in Science Week

1500 students from Co. Roscommon were ‘surrounded by science’ when they recently took part in a number of events to mark Science Week in the county.  The events were co-ordinated by Roscommon County Development Board, in conjunction with Enterprise Ireland. Events included cinema screenings in the cinemobile and Roscommon Arts Centre, recycling workshops in Ballaghaderreen and Castlerea, map-making workshops in Boyle and students also got a chance to visit brand new fire stations in Roscommon, where they spoke to fire fighters and saw the equipment they use.  The aim of Roscommon Science Week is to promote science, technology and engineering disciplines to students in the county at primary and post-primary levels. This was identified as being of critical importance as Roscommon traditionally had a low uptake of these disciplines at third level. Roscommon Science Week is run in conjunction with the national organising body, Science Week Ireland an initiative co-ordinated by the Discover Science and Engineering National Integrated Awareness Programme at Forfás.
