There was a good turnout at Áras an Chontae for last Thursday night’s launch of the 12th annual Roscommon Lamb Festival which runs from Wednesday, May 1st to Monday, May 6th and will coincide with the 21st anniversary of Roscommon town’s twinning with Chartrettes in France.
Gerry Fallon renewed his role as MC at last Thursday’s launch, and paid tribute to the Roscommon Lamb Festival Chairman, Donal Mee’s “attention to detail and attention to people”. The Chairman, for his part, was effusive in his praise of all those who ensure the festival runs smoothly including volunteers and sponsors and said that the event continued to grow each year.
“It has become quite a national event and this year it has become an international event too,” he said, referencing the 21st town twinning celebrations.
Mr. Mee added that more than 30 guests from Chartrettes would be visiting this year’s event.
Roscommon County Council CEO, Eugene Cummins, said the that both the council and elected members were “delighted” to support the event once more and called on people to spread the word about this year’s Roscommon Lamb Festival.
Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, Cllr. Ivan Connaughton said the festival would have something for everyone and that he would be attending as many events as he could. He described the festival as a major part of the social calendar in the county and he looked forward to welcoming visitors from all over the world including Chartrettes over the May Bank Holiday weekend.
Guests at last Thursday’s launch were treated to wonderful reception with wine and light refreshments and music by Ukephoric – The Knockcroghery Ukulele Collective.
During the launch, those in attendance were entertained by the Roscommon Drama Group, which provided a teaser of ‘A Lone Furrow’, the story of Aleen Cust, a famous veterinary surgeon based in Athleague and Ballygar.
