Ordinations at Maynooth On Sunday morning last ordinations to the priesthood took place at Maynooth, his Grace the Archbishop of Dublin being the ordaining prelate. The occasion, it need hardly, of course, be said, was one of the deepest impressiveness. By special trains at six o’clock a large number of the relatives and friends of the newly ordained priests arrived at the College, upwards of two hundred having journeyed from Broadstone. The sacred ceremonies were followed with intense and devotional interest. The following gentlemen were amongst others, ordained by his Grace: Rev Peter O’Connor, Ardagh. Rev Constantine Cunningham, Tuam, Rev Denis Gildea, Achonry, Rev. Patrick Scott, Elphin, Rev. Michael Connellan, Elphin, Rev Martin Broderick, Clonfert, Rev John Kenny, Tuam, Rev Peter O’Farrell, Ardagh, Rev. Martin O’Donnell, Tuam. Death of Mrs. Nolan, Mullymux We regret to announce the death of Mrs. Celia Nolan, relict of the late Peter Nolan, which took place n Tuesday at her residence, Mullymux. Deceased was a member of a very old and respected family, and up to a few weeks previous to her death was in very good health. She had reached the advanced age of 81 years. She bore all her sufferings with patience and resignation to the will of Him who rules supreme, and received the last rites of the Catholic Church, of which she was a devout member, from Very Rev Father O’Hara PP. Her remains were conveyed to Derrane Chapel on Wednesday evening, attended by a large cortege of her many friends and acquaintances. Solemn Requeim Mass was offered up on Thursday morning at Derrane for the repose of her soul with Rev. Father McGowan as celebrant, Rev. Father McPartland, deacon; and Rev Father Devine, sub-deacon. The Right Rev Monsignor McLaughlin and Very Rev Father O’Hara were in the choir. The interment took place in Derrane churchyard immediately after Mass. Drowning fatality On Wednesday last a farmer named Pat Mullooly, residing at Cloonslanor, met with a watery grave in one of his own bog holes where it is conjectured he went to cut turf and fell in while sounding its depth. The dead body was found the following morning by some member of the family who had gone in search of the deceased, who was 71 years of age. He leaves a widow and son to mourn his demise. When the facts of the case were weighed by the Constabulary Authorities it was considered that no inquest was necessary. The funeral to Clonfinough on Friday was large and representative and testified to the esteem in which the family of the deceased has been held. May he rest in peace. The Elphin Lands The famous ranches around Elphin the property of the O’Connors, have at last been handed over to the League, thanks to the zeal displayed by fearless Fagan and others, and that certainly is a great victory for the people, as all the lands including Kilvoy are in meadow; it will prove a great blessing to the people around there, and shall have the effect of leaving meadows very cheap which were it not for this surrender, would run up to extortionate prices. Dastardly outrage An outrage of a dastardly description was perpetrated at Raheen, near Elphin, on the night of the 7th of June, when a valuable donkey, the property of Mr. James Power, was wantonly and maliciously done to death. On that night, convenient to the scene of the outrage, an election victory was being celebrated and rumour has connected it in some measure. The abuse of the donkey was one of the most unnatural and loathsome that has been perpetrated in the county for some time and was worth of a South Sea Island episode. Sequels to cattle driving Intimation has been given by the Crown of the abandonment of proceedings against eighteen men charged in connection with a cattle-drive at Kiltoghert and in whose case the magistrates at Carrick-on-Shannon disagreed at a recent court. Judge Anderson at Gort Quarter Sessions adjourned the hearing of applications for compensation, arising out of cattle driving, pending the decision of the Judge of Assize in an appeal on a legal point raised in similar cases by Mr. Concannon on behalf of the District Council. Decrees were granted to Walter Shaw Taylor and Mrs. Margret Flood for injury to walls.
