An old five-a-side sparring partner of mine, Mick Egan, was in contact earlier this week to inform me of a very special visitor to Boyle recently. The Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup arrived at the home of life-long Shamrock Rovers supporter John Murphy on Saturday night last before popping in to Daly’s Pub for a tipple afterwards.

Mick himself is a big Shamrock Rovers fan and a driving force behind the Roscommon Hoops Supporters Club which follows the great League of Ireland club around the country.

The Hoops won the cup for the 25th time in their history in dramatic circumstances against champions Dundalk at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin last month following a long 32-year wait since number 24.

Needless to say, a Rovers fanatic and member of the Roscommon Hoops Supporters Club, John Murphy was over the moon when his friends in football from both Roscommon and Dublin arranged for the trophy to come to Boyle.

A great night of celebration was enjoyed as the local soccer supporters paid tribute to Shamrock Rovers’ latest success.
